installation problem with ubuntu and pclinuxos

Hi. Very new to Linux. Trying to learn more about it by installing either ubuntu or pclinuxos on an old Toshiba laptop, but can't.

With the Ubuntu [edit: 7.04], LiveCD starts fine (though slowly) but when I try to install it to the HD, nothing happens at all. The CD-ROM just spins, with no accompanying HD activity at all.

With the pclinuxos [edit: .93a, I think], LiveCD starts fine (quite quickly), but when I try to install it to the HD, it gets stuck at about 95% during the copying files process. Again, the CD-ROM just spins with no HD activity.

I've looked and searched, and can't seem to find others with the same problem.

Can anyone help?

What is the specification of your laptop ? Please post it here.

I haven't seen the reason cannot install to HDD by LiveCD because i used fedora 7 without any problem but have bug inside the F7.

You can try the fedora 7. Fedora 7 is easier used than ubuntu.

It's a Toshiba Satellite 1400-S151 with 256MB. I've tried all kinds of permutations of partitioning to no avail. What's really frusting is why, always at the same point (around 95%), the pclinuxos stops installing to the HD. I would think that if there were a problem, the installation wouldn't get that far.
