Install Debian Sarge Freezes

I just bought a new 100GB 7200rpm hitachi travelstar disk drive and decide to give debian a try. I removed my old 60GB with fedora core on it and tried to install it but turns out I can barely start it.

It basically freezes at random points of the instalation in the begining. I cant really get past the configuring the network with DHCP which is the 5th step or so. I thought it might have something to do with the fact that there is no network cable connected to it(even though i thought it would detect it) but it also froze in other steps before this one so I have no idea what to do from here. Any suggestions as to where to start looking for a problem?

Ok so I checked the md5sum for both cds and they passed. I got into expert mode and it was the only way I was able to install it but still every single time i went into the network configuration it hanged so I just skipped the network configuration part(I did install the network though). Still after instalation when trying to boot I get the following error

ACPI-0286: *** Error: No installed handler for fixed event [00000000]

Ive tried installing it several times with different kernel from the options they give me(2.6.8 386, 2.6.8 686, 2.6.8 686smp) and all of them have resulted in the same result. I burned a new cd and tried to install with that one and the same thing happened.

Im going to try again with the 2.4 kernels which I havnt tried yet. If anyone know of a solution to this please help.

I have little suggestion, maybe try acpi=off when you install kernel 2.6 series

>>thanks for the great help.
You are welcome, hope you can come to help on LQ
(if you are not already) when you have time

There is also an acpi=ht (or something like that as an
option that would work). Anyway, just saying that while passing, it
is not important
