I have already install windows server 2008 r2 in my laptop c drive.now I want to install centos 7 or redhat 7 in my d drive..so how can I choose drive..please suggest..

Hi,

when you install centos 7 you can specify the disk/partition on which to install. Before installation pls ensure you know which disks and partitions contain what - specifically which are the windows partition(s).

As you are unsure of how to install centos I would recommend installing to a virtual machine (VM) to get a feel for the installer. I am afraid I know nothing of VMs under windows so I can't recommend a solution. To complement this a quick scoot around the net should show some installation doco to give you an idea.

And as knud highlights, centos is free version of RHEL.

The easy solution for a virtual machine is VirtualBox.

Install VirtualBox, then install CentOS 7 into VirtualBox.

Since this has MS server you could use a MS virtual machine if your laptop has enough resources too. Hyper-v or maybe virtualpc even.

When any person asks a basic question I have to think, is it safe? What is the most safe way for this user to do? The virtual machine fits the bill for safe. A somewhat safe way is to run linux from a usb flash or hard drive and dual boot that way.


If you want to dual boot from internal hard drive then for the most part, you'd boot to your choice of linux and follow the instructions at the web sites help pages.

so you forked over a ton of cash
so you might as well buy RHEL7 then.

the standard one year license is $299 per year

cheep in comparison to the ? what $500 to $1,000 for a single install of windows server 2008
( mind you win 2008 is OLD )



you did check the hardware compatibility ? RIGHT!!!!
rhel and w2k8 are not meant to be on a laptop


i would install a TEXT only install then
( laptops and graphics on rhel do not mix well -- optimums chips )


if you are paying for the red hat classes and the cert then BUY rhel!!!

the last few times i installed fedora on a pc i would just download the live-usb image from the distributions website and click on the 'install-to-harddrive' icon on the desktop (i assume redhat and centos would be the same ?).

If you are honestly going for a 'certification', and can't do any research of your own, or understand/acknowledge what you've been told previously, why are you doing this 'certification'??? You should get a certification AFTER you know what you're doing. A 'certificate' without the knowledge to back it up is useless, and it will be VERY obvious VERY quickly that you don't know the subject.
