install: cant boot from cd, no floppy!

hi

i'm trying to install mandrake 10. i have a compaq r3000t with xp on it, and no floppy drive. i tried setting the bios to boot from the cd, so that mandrake cd can take over, but the laptop is ignoring this and booting back to c and windows.

since i have no floppy drive, i can't boot from that...

does anyone have some idea how to get this to work??

thanks
frizzo

There's a bug in the mdk10 installer where certain cd drives will not boot the 1st install cd. The solution is to boot of the second install cd after which you will be prompted to insert the first cd after a short time and you can proceed with the install.

Frizzo, you have any luck with that?

I'm thinking of buying an r3000t but haven't figured out if it will run linux yet.

walnut,

yea i was able to install mandrake. i used partition magic to make the partitions, in windows.

i made a fat32 partition that is shared by both OSs. Linux automatically mounted it, surprise.

still trying to get the wireless to work. actually i haven't had much time to play with it. most everything else works fine though... make sure to turn the touch pad off and then on again when you boot up linux (the horizontal bar directly above the pad) or it won't recognize it. took me a while to figure that one out.

... and i'm really happy with the laptop, by the way

cheers

compaq r3000t

Thanks Frizzo.

I have the compaq r3000t dual booting XP and Suse 9.0 (awaiting 9.1) with minor configuration problems (my display is not ideal and no sound).
I haven't had time to try to fix them yet. Maybe 9.1 will fix them??

I did a fresh XP install and left a fat partition, then booted Suse 9 and resized the fat partition and added my linux partitions.
