Sorry, but if any of us is going to be able help you, you'll have to post a little more details. The problem could be anything, but we wouldn't know unless we were right there in front of your pc, looking at the screen. Unfortunately we don't have such powers, so you'll have to be as specific as possible when you describe a problem-it'll help us narrow down the causes/effects/solutions. Also try to include as much information as possible when you post.
Here's a few things to consider, for starters:
Is the network card working at all? Meaning is it configured and up but you can't connect to internet addresses or is it the configuration that isn't going right?
ok sorry for not being more spasfic.. im new to linux so i dont really knwo what im talkin about.... but here it goes... when i run mepis or mandrake it reconizes everything i think but the internet... here is what led me to beleve this... 1. home page wont open
2. i cant connect to outher computers on my network... next in mandrake i go to install the driver thru the configure hardware area... i load up eepro100 "what i was told is the driver for my intel pro 100/VE onboard network card from my laptop... i click on teh eepro100 driver and it brings me back to configure hardware.. if i pick another driver it tells me its the wrong one..... let me know if u need more info to help me... thanks again
I don't know about the mandrake gui for configuring these things, but i'm guessing that if you're returned to the 'configure hardware' page that would mean the driver was successfully configured/loaded. Now open up a terminal and type
su -
followed by your root password.
Then type
ifup eth0 (i'm assuming eth0 is your network interface-if it's something else, change accordingly)
If that returns errors, post them here. If the command completes successfully, then next type
ifconfig
This command will show you information about your network interface, such as MAC address, ip address, etc.
Mandrake probably has some gui tools to do all that, but i don't know what or where they are. You could try looking though.
When you say you can't connect to other computers on the network, do you mean using ping or some other means? Because if you're trying to connect to a windows network, it won't work-you'll have to set it up first. If this was in fact the case, then if all goes well with ifconfig, try pinging one of the computers on your network.
If none of that worked, post the output of lspci and lsmod.
ok i opened a termnial typed in su then when i typed ifup eth0 i got this error : /sbin/ifup: configuration for eth0 not found... i tried this from eth0 to eth5 and got teh same response.... when i typed in ifconfig i got this
