Inspiron 1000 + slack 10.1 = no sound

Just installed Slack 10.1 on my Inspiron 1000,but no sound now. This is the first linux distro I've put on this laptop (just got it).

Anyways log files have no mention of any sound problems, alsaconf detected the right soundcard and didn't spit out any errors, the mixers (aumix, kmix) seem to work, I even get graphics representations of the sounds when I open them in xine.

So far I've read that snd_intel8x0m conflicts with snd_intel8x0 so I blacklisted it in /etc/blacklist no help. Tried playing a sound in gnome instead of KDE, nothing there either. And yes I've made sure the sound wasn't muted

Any other ideas? I'm running low now.

Thanks

Did you run alsamixer and check the settigs in the control center?
I am still in 10.0 but it sounds like you have a working system. Could be permission on the device file, /dev/dsp0 or dsp
try lsmod to see if your cards module is listed.
/etc/modules.conf is the file and should have alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x? listed.
Check the cords.
Good luck.

No cords to play with its using the built in speakers. It doesn't even have an external control for the sound, volume is at whatever the mixer tells it. Volume on the mixer is cranked to full, no sound.

lsmod does show the sound driver.

Fixed the problem.
I'll post what I did here for anyone else that has the same problem. Apperently Slack10.1's alsa is foobar'd (at least in my case). I went to slacks site and got the following packages from slack 10.

alsa-driver-1.0.5a-i486-2.tgz
alsa-lib-1.0.5-i486-1.tgz
alsa-oss-1.0.5-i486-1.tgz
alsa-utils-1.0.5-i486-1.tgz

mv'd them to / and tar -zxvf each one. ran /etc/rc.d/rc.alsa

and my sound now works.
