Angry Im going to give up on ACPI support

Ok, so far Ive tried recompiling the kernel, which I never managed to get done, and installing ACPI and ACPID, with no luck. My acpi has yet to start on boot. I even checked the blacklist of BIOS and mines not on there. Every time I try to edit lilo.conf and change it to acpi=on, it freezes on boot. This is the last thing that keeps me from running Linux 24/7, because my laptop gets very heated after about 30 minutes, even sitting at idle. Does anyone have any more suggestions? I may just wait for 9.2 and hope that it has better support

I installed gkrellm, and still havent figured out how to get that running yet either.

I'm having the same sort of problems with my Dell Latitude D600. It has a Pentium M 1.3GHz and it gets HOT if I'm booted into Linux because of no ACPI. I've never compiled my own kernal before I'm going to read how to do it in the slackware book at www.slackware.com/book/ and then I am doing it

You have to have patience. I'm going to take my time on this and get it right. Even if I have to do it 500 times.

Never Give Up!

I know it is frustrating, but don't give up. Linux on a laptop is a beautiful thing. Take kernel recompilation slow and by the book. What kind of laptop is it?

Its a Compaq 722US. Basically ive found out there is no ACPI support in my kernel which means compiling. I can do that, but Ive never done it before, and I need a step by step guide to doing it.

What distro are you running? SuSE 8.2 and Mandrake 9.0 and 9.1 have acpi in the kernel. All I had to do on my Compaq 2170 was to enable acpid for runlevel 5.

FWIW, I don't have a laptop but maybe this can help. I had problems with shutting down MDK 9.1 on my desktop computer. Basically had to restart into Win98 and shut down from there in order to properly shut off the machine.

I posted in another forum and a member suggested checking the power management settings. I went into the Mandrake Control Centre and tried making adjustments. No improvement.

The other night I had added FreeBSD 4.8 to this box, and I messed up the bootloader - the one FreeBSD applied gave me a choice for windows or FreeBSD, no linux. Horrors !

I rebooted with the Mandrake install disk to do an update instead of full install. This way I was able to reapply Lilo, and one option in it's configuration was a checkbox offering to "apply (or enable?) acpi".

I chose this and voila - the machine shutdown perfectly on the next attempt. And all 3 OS's are available to me at boot. Woo Hoo!

Dunno if this helps, good luck to you.

I have Mandrake 9.1, but when I try to start acpi in the shell, it says no ACPI support in kernel. Any other ideas?
