Icons do not appear anymore.
I have a 4g Eee pc preloaded with Xandos
I was using synaptic and uninstalled a few things and then the desktop just went black and the little power button icon didn't work when I went to turn it off. I had to restore the factory settings. This has happen over 3 times now. |

I was trying to install a program off a 2G USB drive (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ership-753187/), after dealing with it for the past 3 days, I got it to start the install but then I didn't have enough space. I thought I saw on the PC that I still had 1.3G left. I don't understand how I am going to install updates if I cannot even use a 22meg program. Another question I have is about those updates and more space. Am I going to be able to run anything off of a SD card or a USB drive? |
In a terminal type
Code:
df -h You can use the SD card or a USB drive to store your private files, doc, mp3,movies... |

And what do I do about updates on this 4G Eee PC? Edit: For some reason it put everything closer together, sorry. Edit2: What I don't get is that everything on there has over 100M, maybe I need to use a different folder? |
I need everyone to know too, that this is going to be for tuning a car, so I need files to be saved when I go tuning. This of course is raising my questions.
I cannot be at the track and not be able to log my runs and tunes. My idea is just plug in a USB drive (like I already have) or SD Card and be able to save my tunes/runs on that. Then be able to put/use them on different PCs? All my PCs have this ECMLink software. My ending goal is to have all 3 PCs connecting to a network drive that I can share these files with. |
Well I'm going to try again.
Will do one at a time and see what happens. Edit: Should I be marking them as removal or complete removal? So using synaptic, I uninstall all the things under "Games and Amusement", so far so good. |

If your computer causes trouble again and you want to try something new:
It is possible to install a minimal Debian on a 2GB SD card or flash drive, if your computer can boot from that. It's the same procedure as a normal HDD install, you just have to keep an eye on the space that is left on that disk, and the whole drive will be used for that. I managed to install Debian on a 2GB SD card with Xfce and compiz and I had about 400MB left. |

I should be able to do the same with... say a 16gb or 32gb one correct? Or if I keep having problems with this Linux I can always use a different Linux correct? And then just use the SD card or USB drive for files and whatever. Well I got the program to install but now I cannot use it, lol. And I know the box was check to put it on the desktop, so I'm lost again |
type
Code:
whereis program_name |

You can always use different distributions (kind of the suppliers of [Free Software] operating systems). Just be careful with sensitive data that you may have on your computer. A beginner-friendly Linux distribution is http://www.ubuntu.com/ I can't help you on your icon problem, maybe if you say what kind of program you installed (a windows *.exe?). |

Edit: I wanted to add that I also dual booted Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop 64 with my XP 64. |
If everything is working now, you should...
Have fun and enjoy Free Software! ;) |
