I'm thinking of getting a 12 in ppc g4 ibook as my next "netbook", and I think it should have good unix support. For example, it uses ati graphics.
But when I looked for open source openfirmware implementations, well... there aren't any. Coreboot doesn't work on ppc, Openbios is abandoned I guess, and so is openboot, smartfirmware and slof.
Is there any way to get an open-source-ish bootloader on an ibook? Like how refit is for Intel macs? And what hardware would or would not work?

Why do you want to replace the existing firmware? I've gotten several Linux distributions (e.g. Debian) running on PPC G4s with Apple's stock firmware.

More control. Supporting oss. Better security, the usual.
