Question ibook 2.2 yellow dog 3.01 audio problems

Hello everyone. I am a self classified noobie - I've used linux for no more than 2 weeks now, and although I am talking unix classes in college - some of the problems I'm experiencing can only be solved with experience (aka POWER USER - YOU!)
Here's the problems - I'm using a yellow dog distro of linux (ver 3.0 or 3.01) with a benh kernel in a gnome enviroment. I have no issues with the video or internet (currently using an ibook 900 G3 with radeon 7500 and airport - I am writing this post in linux now). BUT - I am having significant problems with my audio. I have searched high an low for an explanation but I have yet to find the solution. This is the problem. When linux installed the test audio plays (midi format perhaps?) Yet I can't hear anything that try and play in the cd player (used the normal cd player and xmms) and I don't think I can hear any wav files - NOTHING! I've tried to edit some of the modules.conf documents to load specific drivers as was suggested by another site, but I still can't hear anything from the cdrom. I understand that the primary reason for this is because it must play in digital mode (no wire connecting the cdrom...??) But I have absolutely no idea how to fix this.
Below is a copy of my modules.conf configuration - any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
