IBM X31 with Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty fawn - wireless, CF card don't work yet
Here is a draft description about the problems:
Laptop: ibm x31 Linux distribution: ubuntu 7.0.4 feisty fawn kernel 2.6.20-16-generic driver: ipw2100 BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN On a clean install wifi didn't work. ifconfig doesn't see eth1 just eth0 We started out with doing ipw2100-1.2.2.tgz/INSTALL This is suspicious: $ sudo /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build/include/linux/autoconf.hsudo: /lib/modules/2.6.20-16-generic/build/include/linux/autoconf.h: command not found This is where we were stuck: 10. LOADING FIRMWARE VIA HOT-PLUG Because instead of hot-plug there was another programme for the same function... (sorry don't remember which). and also i tried to use a CF card, i used a description from here: marzocca-point-net /linux/ubuntux31-pont-html but it didn't work, /media/CF already existed but i didn't find hde1 in dev this is also suspicious: when i switch to bash i get this error message bcm43xx: Error Microcode: "bcm43xx-microcode5.fw" not available or load failed I have no idea what this could be, I'm a linux starter, but I really need to get the wifi and the CF working. Please if anybody can help, give me as detailed description as possible, cause I'm really just started using linux. (Ah, yes: and I don't want to use windows anymore, not even partly, so there I won't install another OS on this notebook just because its easier...) thnx a lot hajni |
Umm?
You say you have a "BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN", yet you're trying to install drivers for the Intel PRO wireless 2100B card. Of course, this is bound to fail, you could try installing drivers for the BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN, apparently it's pretty easy if you follow SageMassa's directions in this thread. Well, maybe not exactly cut and dry, he mentions how he is using ndiswrapper, normally ndiswrapper is used in conjunction with the Windows versions of the drivers. In his post he says this ---> "Ensure you have multiverse and universe sources available.", I would think he's talking about the Windows drivers for the card which will probably need to be in the same directory as the script you are instructed to download and execute with command "sudo ./ndiswrapper_setup_Feisty". Not sure what a CF card is, so I'll leave that to someone else. |
Apparently, this other thread looks better as it gives links to download the Windows drivers, and a useful tip to get the system to boot faster, you'll need to have the machine online to do some downloading with Ubuntu:

my X31 has an atheros card recognised as ath0, and i used the MadWifi driver and it worked fine. You should try that :)
Sorry, I'm not a pro, try that and then I'll help u more if I can :) |
