IBM Thinkpad Issues

Hi All,

The good news is that many variants of Linux run on IBM Thinkpads.

Here's the issue I have. I do not have a CD Drive I have a battery as my laptop an IBM Thinkpad A21E is for boat navigation.

A while back my IBM 600E's motherboard died. I had Linspire (debian core) installed. I thought at the time that sticking the hard drive into the A21E would pose no problems. But no mouse (ps/2/usb/serial) no nic and if I ran linspire from the grub menu the screen would turn into a mess.

I tried the options of Linspire grub menu to redetect diagnose all to no avail. No help in Linspire forums either.

Not being able to use a CD drive I did manage to install UBUNTU on an LG 1 gig pen drive but though it will boot on a desktop pc I have failed to get it to boot via the grub menu on the laptop - in fact any laptop.

I have a linspire 5 CD - which I could copy to the pen drive - but what do I need to do to get it to run?

Help appreciated

Regards,

David

At the command line does "shutdown -h now" work? Or "reboot." These are basic commands.

I had no probs that I can recall with Fedora on my A21E but that was about 5 years ago - so I think it must be in the bios settings of the laptop - power off key - take a look at what settings there are there in regard to turning on and off the laptop.

Also look to see what drivers are available from IBM via Lenevo - IBM did work on SUSE and Fedora and there are drivers and a BIOS update.

Happy Days

David
PS there may be delays in getting back to replies cos I live on a boat and have to get ashore to the internet cafe.
