IBM Thinkpad 600e Installation

I installed SuSE Linux 8.2 on my IBM Thinkpad 600e laptop yeasterday but the graphics card does not seem to have configured. Its a NeoMagic card.

Can somebody please point me in the right direction.

Have you tried running sax? (at the command prompt, su to root and then type 'sax'). That will bring up your X configuration. Then you'll have to select the neo magic card in the card list, and set your monitor to an lcd. Test it first to make sure it works. If for some reason the card dosent work properly, I've found that you can always just use the SVGA setting for decent performance.

su to root and edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file. You might want to back up the old one first.

Your device section should look like this:

Section "Device"
        Identifier        "Generic Video Card"
        Driver                "neomagic"

This works well for the LCD screen on the 600E:

Section "Monitor"
        Identifier        "Generic Monitor"
        HorizSync        30-60
        VertRefresh        50-75
        Option                "DPMS"

The screen section usually has lots of entries but you wouldn't want to run it at any other resolution that 1024x768 unless you have an external monitor:

Section "Screen"
        Identifier        "Default Screen"
        Device                "Generic Video Card"
        Monitor                "Generic Monitor"
        DefaultDepth        16
        SubSection "Display"
                Depth                16
                Modes                "1024x768"

The rest is pretty putting your countrycode (se for Sweden, de for Germany, etc) as the XkbLayout option under the keyboard input device section.
