hplip 1.7.3 install keeps giving error message - unable to connect to hpoid?

I am running Dapper on my laptop here at home, and trying to run the hplip 1.7.3-run installer. I use the command (in terminal) sudo sh hplip-1.7.3.run. Everyting goes just fine until the end where I should configure the printer but all I keep getting is

"X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device 154
Major opcode: 143
Minor opcode: 3
Resource id: 0x0
Failed to open device
X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device 154
Major opcode: 143
Minor opcode: 3
Resource id: 0x0
Failed to open device
error: Unable to connect to hpiod.
error: Unable to connect to HPLIP I/O. Please (re)start HPLIP and try again."

Any idea why I keep getting this error? I did the same install on my desktop (Compaq 5900Z with Dapper running) and all went just fine--set up the printer and it works great. The HP C5140 is a network printer used by three comps, two running Dapper and one running XP. The XP and Compaq both print just fine, and all comps can ping each other and the printer just fine. This laptop is the only one showing me this error everytime. Any clues to a fix for this?? Thanks again for the help.

RE: hplip 1.7.3 install keeps giving error message - unable to connect to hpoid?

First off, do not use 'sudo' for the 'sh hplip-...run' command. The installer is intended to run as your regular user and it will ask for a sudo password if needed. If you do not do this, all the files that are created during the build will be owned by root and it will be a pain to clean them up.

Second, make sure that 'lsb' is installed. After that, run:

$ sudo /etc/init.d/hplip restart

If this doesn't succeed, than please post to the hplip mailing list on sf.net for more assistance.

Thanks,

Don
