HP WiFi toggle button not working

Greetings and Happy Holidays!
My HP laptop has a Wi-Fi toggle button that was working up until recently. In KDE it would toggle "Enable wireless" on or off, but now it does nothing.

I've tested the input with showkey --scancodes and it gets nothing. I do mention that the machine has another identical button that launches the web browser. This one is working.

So how can I test it to see if it's a hardware problem or a software problem? I didn't do anything that could break it and the laptop is pretty new.

maybe you could try
Quote:
modprobe rfkill
and try it again. Its a kernel module to give control over wireless controls.

My HP (6715S) was particularly troublesome so I never switched the thing off.

Well, nothing happens when running the command and the button still does not work.

I never solved it. I would boot vista, and that would do it. then I could shut vista and reboot linux. There is an rfkill command, with switches and a manpage probably installed on your system. Have you tried that? You'll need to be root for it.
