HP Pavilion dv6186eu with linux .. Wireless issue?

Hi..

I am planning on being portable again and getting the HP Pavilion dv6186eu..

Here are some of the laptop specs..

Processor type : AMD Turion™ 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-56
Standard memory : 1024 MB
HDD: 120 GB SATA
Wireless technologies : 802.11a/b/g WLAN
Video adapter : NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 7200

I did abit of searching and found out that there are a few issues with wireless ... The specs sheet doesn't mension the type of wireless modem thats on the system so am not sure if its the same as the broadcom people have been struggling with ...

Any insite on this system should I go for it?

I haven't tried AMD or 64bit processors before so am so excited...

Will apprecaite any feedback ..

Going to their website and reviewing the drivers mentions it as a broadcom. Not sure which version. Searching ggogle on a/b/g broadcom showed many like 4306, 4309, and few others. Not sure as to which. Downloaded the driver but not much info without indepth reading of the files. Worst case is it will ndiswrapper for the nic.

As far as the rest the nvidia should work with the latest nvidia drivers. Check it out first.

AMD 64x2 are nice dual processor in one package. Speed is nice and ram size is nice. Certaining will go to 2 gig or maybe 4 gig.

HardDrive size is great and the dvd drive suppports lightscribe which there is a linux app for that. Also support for all dvd formats included dvd-rams. dvd-rams are great for storing data and being able to remove data without wiping the entire dvd-ram. It acts just like a removable harddrive. I have two on my desktops and love them.

One thing I may dislike is the express 54 slot. I currently have many pcmcia cards and not sure if one can find and adapter to go from these pcmcia cards to express54 slot.

The cardreader will more than likely not work as well.

Overall it looks to be very good unit. If you can take a knoppix live cd to where one is and ask to boot up with it. Done it in the past to confirm what things are and what I was into before buying.

Thanx Brian for ur input ..
The annoying thing is that this laptop and another model from the same series are the only AMD laptops available in the local market...

I think I will go for it and see how things are ...
I will try giving knoppix CD a try if they let me...

Thanx a million

Acer makes a few and Compaq has a few models. Know of a few with Acers and like them a lot under Linux. One has and older generic SGI video I beleive and the other has the ATI Radeon 1600.

Been looking for one and just can't decide. I like the HP other than the express54 slot.
