I never installed linux on a notebook but from what other user's opinions SuSE is best for hardware recognition, you should give it a try.

HP laptops normally support linux quite well. (I too own a differernt HP model) check this website for a similar model like what you have:

And add your own entry later tohttp://www.linux-on-laptops.com/hp.html .

My hp notebook model is dv1345ea. Thanks to everyone who replied to my post...maybe i will try my luck w/ SuSe...another question, can I still use Win XP & Linux (dual booting) on my notebook? Hope there's someone out there who has the same model as i have, who's thinking the same thing on moving to linux (or have moved to linux w/ success!!!) I deeply appreciate everyone here who's so unselfish sharing their knowledge/experiences to newbies like me.

When I started as new I also used SuSE - I would strongly recommend for beginners. Yes, keep the option of dual boot. Try:
1. if you don't have any windows partition manager - Burn yourself a knoppix CD (google for it). Then use "qtparted" and re-partition your hard disk. http://qtparted.sourceforge.net/ Note: Suse can also partition your drive but I prefer knoppix.
3. Then boot with SuSE CD/DVD and install.

I've installed a few distros on my dv1000, dv1245cl to be specific, without much trouble at all. I was a total linux newbie when I installed Ubuntu breezy. Then I tried SUSE 10, which also worked fine. Slackware was kind of a pain in the ass, but I didn't really know enough about linux to set it up right when I was installing, so I think it may work fine by now.

The only problems I've run into have been with wireless. For some reason, i can only get it up from the command.

My dv is down to one usb port now, as it came with one that was broken, and they have chronic problems with the back right usb port failing. I can't say too many bad things about it though, because its pretty old and has been all over iraq and back with me.

I have the same laptop and I am unable to get wireless up at all. COuld you run through real quick what you did to get it to work. I would be real happy. So far I am impressed with Suse 10.1. Runs real well. No hardware issues other than the wireless on the HP dv1000. Went lot better than the last laptop I installed Linux onbut that was about 6 years ago.

Suse 10.2 wifi worked out of box for me, so I would try updating first. Be advised that the LEDs do not work by default, so your card may be on without you knowing it. You could try connecting, then push the switch and try again. If that doesn't work, try installing the ipw 2200 drivers and firmware. There is a way to get the LED working, its in the ipw2200 docs, but it doesn't behave as expected.

Cool thanks I'll give the drivers try first as I just installed 10.1. I read there where some other issues with 10.2 so I would rather wait till they are fixed. Thanks for the help.
