Redwater, you shouldn't hijack the thread. But for a laptop, you probably want to use a binary distro; since most are, it comes down taste. I like Debian and Arch. Sometimes Mandriva, but I'm more unstable. BTW, those SanDisk 5-in-1's are quite nice aren't they? Hey, do me a favour - put a 2GB 150x-or-so SD-card in it, and set up the device as the swap partition... Does it work well? [don't do this for long, it'll wear out the flash card's life...]

I have no idea what hdragun was talking about... ok, I have an idea. He's saying that when you use grub, you still have to use the Vista boot loader. Like you have to use the XP boot loader. Or the Mac OS X boot loader. Or the FreeBSD boot loader [not really, grub can do FreeBSD]... That's why Grub uses the "chainloader +1" command for Vista.

If he means something else, I want a shot of the crack pipe he's got - I'm in Vista right now [gah, I hate it! - and I've got points I've never seen before, too] and never saw the Vista boot loader, even with XP installed alongside Linux. 'Course, only the Vista partition was marked Active, which is what I assume Vista uses.

As for CPU use, I'm no help there. CPU use SHOULD be down from XP.

BTW, I don't really hate Vista. It's got some stunning technical achievments, and would make a great OS to improve upon... but I really question how much thought went into the UI design; some blatant problems are noticeable [feel free to PM me if you want to know what I thought was annoying].

Good point Andrew about it filling memory with "anticipated" programs. Do you really want a Laptop to use it's battery filling memory with anticipated programs I ask? [BTW, in Linux you can see detailed specs about your battery with the commands "cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state" and "cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/info". WARNING: It just might make you decide to run on AC without the battery most of the time...]
