Smile HP G61-110SA Notebook - Which Linux?

Hi

Just wondering if anyone has a HP G61-110SA Notebook and can tell me which version of Linux works with all the hardware, i.e.:
  • Sound
  • Correct screen resolution
  • All other hardware

I've tried using Ubuntu 9.10 and Linux Mint 8 from a Live CD but their was no sound working on both of these distro's.

I'm reluctant to install a Linux system on this HP Laptop if their will be sound problems or screen resolution problems etc

If anyone has managed to get Linux installed and working on this machine Please share your experiences, suggestions, and ideas.

Thanks in advance

Keep on trying.
Here's a link to another version of linux: puppy linux which you can also try as a Live-CD. I have used puppy linux on several desktops, laptops, notebooks & am now using a USB-Flash mounted pup431 version on a Samsung netbook. In all cases sound, video, ethernet & wifi worked.

Hi

Thanks, I've tried puppy linux in the past, which I tend to use more for rescue purposes and not as a main distro.

I appreciate you trying to help but I'm looking for something gnome or kde based preferably not kde 4.

Please keep suggestions coming though and have a good new year!

Cool Quick update

In my quest to discover which Linux distro would detect all hardware from a Live CD, amongst the several distro's I've downloaded was OpenSuse 11.2.

This worked from the Live CD, detected all my hardware including sound-card and correct screen resolution of 1366 x 786.

I did have to chose the vesa mode at the beginning of the boot screen but nevertheless it worked.

However, I'm more keener on using a debian based system, and have been looking at Linux Mint 8 again which from the Live CD detected correct screen resolution but was only able to hear sound using my external earphones plugged into headphone socket.

This suggests with a bit of tweaking I should be able to get sound configured.

And perhaps have a go at installing to hard drive with Win 7 dualboot

Cool update

Managed to get the latest version of sidux installed and loving it I have to say.

All hardware working, but haven't managed to download any wifi drivers simply because I don't need wireless working anyway.

But screen res, sound, cam, built-in mic, all work!

very happy with sidux, lovely distro, very fast and responsive
