HP DV6000 touchpad automatically clicking

Using Ubuntu 12.04, installed last week from a CD and touchpad not working correctly, re-installed, this time connected to the Internet, and it is still not working right. Had hoped to get updated drivers. Problem is the touchpad automatically clicks constantly. The computer is barely usable. It is either launching applications I don't want launched, or selecting text I don't want selected. I am afraid it is the touchpad itself but am hoping someone else has an answer. Bought the computer at the Goodwill for $29, bought ram, a battery and a hard drive for another $100, hoping to have a functioning laptop. I have disabled tap clicking and that helps a little but the problem is still there. Also have tried switching it to left hand. This has it's own set of problems as the context menu keeps popping up. I have used Linux casually for years but am by no means an expert. Anyone? Is there a file I can modify to shut it off entirely? Is it the touchpad? Does that need to be replaced? I really don't want to use it with a mouse.

So I tried the mouse. It moves the cursor but the left click does not work at all. ??? I have no idea. I have never tried running anyting but Linux on this machine. Is it Linux?
