hp compaq nx9105 2 main problems

I do have compaq nx9105. I tried some linux distros on it but there is a couple of problems I always face with. First of all the system cannot poweroff at the end of shutdown process. I know that desktop PCs can. What to do to make the laptop do it? And secondly, I there is a problem when I switch to text screen from X, the screen becomes unreadable. What would be the problem?

For poweroff it could be an option set to be passed to your kernel at boot time that looks like pci=noacpi. Get rid of it. Now about the screwed up display you need NVidia binary drivers for text mode to work after switching from X. Good luck. It's a great laptop!
