Does anyone know how to upgrade the BIOS of a Lennovo L540 laptop, when only running Debian Linux on the machine ?

I suggest that you only update bios if some change in bios version directly affects your use.

Freedos is also one way mentioned.
Just be sure to check that the OEM. Some provide a bootable media image of some OS that will boot to and update bios. Some are even updateable from a usb while booting to a bios update feature in the system.

THX for your advice

I have noted your sincere warning - THX a lot.
The BIOS itself suggest a version upgrade, but it does seem, that there are no problems supporting such an upgrade.

I'll hold the horses.

THX a lot everybody for quick and competent answers...
