how to turn permanently turn on laptop fan?;]

hi everybody;]

I have got the problem with my Acer Aspire 5610z laptop. It is overheating for some reason and turns off suddenly. The laptop fan works, it turns on when reaching appropriate temperature but sometimes either fails to start cooling the cpu or the temperature gets high to fast, don't know. I was trying to find out the way to keep the fan turned on permanently with no success so far. Cannot change any setting in bios as there are no options regarding fan controlling. Any ideas folks? Any suggestion very appreciated;]

cheers,

blorpton

Since the fan works, but doesn't start cooling, try to clean the perforations and the air passages.
I don't think turning on the fan all the time will solve your problem.
Do you have acpi installed ?

blorpton 01-11-2010 11:08 AM

yep, fan and all surrounding area is dustfree and yes i have got acpi package installed(don't know if it needs/can be configured in some way). this problem is very common to aspire series. Mainly because of bios that interacts with microsoft systems throughout some third party bloatware controlling cooling for example...but anyway, is there any way to control fan work under linux?

cheers

If it turns on and off automatically under Linux, then I don't think Microsoft is involved---i would guess it is a BIOS function.

If there is no setting in the BIOS, you could always hardwire the fan to the power bus.

BUT---There are many potential causes of overheating that might still be there after you alter the fan operation.

Do you have CPU frequency scaling running?

Just installed cpufreqd, just after reboot now...see if it works for me....

thx for replay.
