Angry compiling modem driver/ so close yet so far

With further googling, I found this url:

http://members.cox.net/arickiver1/gw450x.html

Based on this individual's testimonial, using the smartlink modem driver should be the ticketm *if* I can get through the link and compile using gcc.

Or, is it *easier* to use the RPM method shown in the README file?

Do you (or anyone else reading this) have any level of experience with compiling these drivers?

Help from anyone who has done this would be greatly appreciated.

able to compile

Ok,

I have compiled the modem driver with a change to the Makefile's KERNAL_INCLUDES to point to the correct path into /usr/src/linux-2-4/include.

The next steps was to install the driver with "make install-amr" which danced a jig and according to the README file by default creates a symbolic link from /dev/modem to ./ttySL0.

Here is the directory listing as I found it:

[root@localhost dev]# pwd
/dev
[root@localhost dev]# ls -l modem
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Feb 14 20:58 modem -> ./ttySL0

When I then ran kppp, and queried the modem it responded!!!

PROGRESS!!!

Then, we I tried to dial up my isp, I could see the status window showed various AT modem commands with "OK" results including ATDT (phone#)

But, I cannot hear anything from the speaker as in the dial-tone progress swishing noise of the modem.

My WinXP control panel shows the modem as COM3.

Does then the link from /dev/modem need to point to ./ttySL2??

Please advise.

Thanks morphinjunky for getting me this far!!!

Well, that's different than 'no modem found'.

Any other thoughts?

(I'll be looking around here in LQ.org to see if there are any others who have had this issue, while I wait for your reply.)

Thanks alot for volunteering your help!

He meant well, but I think he gave you a typo. Try ttyS2 instead of ttys2. The case makes a difference in Linux.

Help

Yes and I trust you mean well also.

But you'll notice I took the trouble in preceding exchanges to thank him/her in more than one place as he/she was quite helpful, unlike yourself.

Have a good day.

Follow up

I just reread my response and I apologize if it comes across as being curt.

I guess you caught me when I was not in a good mood.

Sorry.

Hey, Ralph2222222, fyi I have tried both of upper/lower ttys2 and ttyS2.
Neither works.

I am just somewhat dissappointed that I am not getting anywhere with this.

I'll will keep on looking for a solution in lieu of hearing from anyone else here.

*********************************************************
As long as things like this happen to users who may wish to cross over to Linux, the perception is going to be that *Linux is hard to configure*.

At least that's the response I get from my brother who is on M$ bandwagon.
*********************************************************

Surely there is a simple solution to this.

I hope the answer is not that I need to replace my modem with one that is Linux compatible.

But *** thanks again *** anyway.
At least you put forth the effort to reply.

I'll try to have a good day and you do the same.

Regards to the LinuxQuestions.org community.

When you query the modem, what is listed in reponse?

Once you get to this point, you should be able to dial into your isp.

And if you are using the dialogue box to change the port that is used, you don't need to worry about case. Just click on the appropiate port.

IRQ 10

When I look in the WinXP control panel, I see that COM3 on my Laptop is mapped to IRQ10.

Is this an issue, because I have read that ttyS2 is mapped to another IRQ, 5, I believe.

If so, what do I do with that.
I'll get back to you with what the query modem responses are with S2.
(I am at work and will check it out this evening around 6:00p, EST USA.)

Hoping you have an answer,
Thanks again, Michael is it?

I guess a rotten mood would explain a response like that ("he/she was quite helpful, unlike yourself"). But I ignored what I felt, and just took it for its honesty value (as well as its accuracy).

I am a newbie, still, even though I've been dabbling with Linux for a few years now. My newbie status is slipping in some areas, while still being newly discovered in others. I chose my words poorly when I said "He meant well, but...". That sounds very condescending although I had no such sentiment. Instead, I should have said "He's giving you very good information, but...".

But I'm not only still somewhat of a newbie to Linux, I'm an absolute newbie to this list. I made my response when I came to the end of the page of the thread. I thought that was the end of the thread. Later, I discovered that there was a page 2, and was quite embarrassed when I saw "ttyS2" already there.

I yield to those far more knowledgeable than I. (no sarcasm)

Apologies are in order

Ralph2222

My foul for dishing out such a *pissy* unprofessional response.
I apologize to you here and promise it won't happen again.

This is a forum for HELP and I appreciate any that is offered, including yours.

Anyhowwwww, there's GOT to be a reason WHY it's not getting dial tone!

morphinejunky has been more than generous with his time and thoughtful suggestions.

I'll try to follow thru with his last one and get back here with my results tomorrow.

I am determined to get this working!

Thanks Ralph for your candor and help!

Kindest Regards,
linux_junky

New External Modem

Ok,

I broke down and bought today a Zoom Model 3048 External Modem serial cabled to my COM1 port.

Now, when I boot to Linux and kppp and select ttyS0 as the modem it dials up the ISP ok but then exits with verbiage:

Exit Status: 19
Couldn't find interface ppp0.

The terminal window from which I loaded it shows:

"pppd daemon died unexpectedly"

Is the pppd daemon possibly not running?

Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this?

Any guidance you can give would be appreciated.

The End of this long and tedious thread

Ok,

kppp pppd exit code 19 was an authentication issue. login id was set incorrectly.

I am now surfing the net with Linux; my goal has been met.
Zoom (Conexant Chipset) external serial Modem model # 3048

Don't know why I am not showing either the 56K panel light or the V.92 light, but maybe the phone # for this ISP doesn't support it.

But that's for another thread.

Thanks Micheal and Ralph
