I have compiled the modem driver with a change to the Makefile's KERNAL_INCLUDES to point to the correct path into /usr/src/linux-2-4/include.
The next steps was to install the driver with "make install-amr" which danced a jig and according to the README file by default creates a symbolic link from /dev/modem to ./ttySL0.
Here is the directory listing as I found it:
[root@localhost dev]# pwd
/dev
[root@localhost dev]# ls -l modem
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Feb 14 20:58 modem -> ./ttySL0
When I then ran kppp, and queried the modem it responded!!!
PROGRESS!!!
Then, we I tried to dial up my isp, I could see the status window showed various AT modem commands with "OK" results including ATDT (phone#)
But, I cannot hear anything from the speaker as in the dial-tone progress swishing noise of the modem.
My WinXP control panel shows the modem as COM3.
Does then the link from /dev/modem need to point to ./ttySL2??
Please advise.
Thanks morphinjunky for getting me this far!!!
Regards to the LinuxQuestions.org community!
I just reread my response and I apologize if it comes across as being curt.
I guess you caught me when I was not in a good mood.
Sorry.
Hey, Ralph2222222, fyi I have tried both of upper/lower ttys2 and ttyS2.
Neither works.
I am just somewhat dissappointed that I am not getting anywhere with this.
I'll will keep on looking for a solution in lieu of hearing from anyone else here.
*********************************************************
As long as things like this happen to users who may wish to cross over to Linux, the perception is going to be that *Linux is hard to configure*.
At least that's the response I get from my brother who is on M$ bandwagon.
*********************************************************
Surely there is a simple solution to this.
I hope the answer is not that I need to replace my modem with one that is Linux compatible.
But *** thanks again *** anyway.
At least you put forth the effort to reply.
When I look in the WinXP control panel, I see that COM3 on my Laptop is mapped to IRQ10.
Is this an issue, because I have read that ttyS2 is mapped to another IRQ, 5, I believe.
If so, what do I do with that.
I'll get back to you with what the query modem responses are with S2.
(I am at work and will check it out this evening around 6:00p, EST USA.)
Hoping you have an answer,
Thanks again, Michael is it?
Originally posted by Ralph2222222 He meant well, but I think he gave you a typo. Try ttyS2 instead of ttys2. The case makes a difference in Linux.
I guess a rotten mood would explain a response like that ("he/she was quite helpful, unlike yourself"). But I ignored what I felt, and just took it for its honesty value (as well as its accuracy).
I am a newbie, still, even though I've been dabbling with Linux for a few years now. My newbie status is slipping in some areas, while still being newly discovered in others. I chose my words poorly when I said "He meant well, but...". That sounds very condescending although I had no such sentiment. Instead, I should have said "He's giving you very good information, but...".
But I'm not only still somewhat of a newbie to Linux, I'm an absolute newbie to this list. I made my response when I came to the end of the page of the thread. I thought that was the end of the thread. Later, I discovered that there was a page 2, and was quite embarrassed when I saw "ttyS2" already there.
I yield to those far more knowledgeable than I. (no sarcasm)
