Angry how to configure internal modem

I have an internal modem (I don't know if it is a winmod) in my laptop HP Omniboog PIII, my RH 9.0 recognize the material,
it is listed in the /etc/sysconfig/hwconfig, the type is : ESS ES56CVM; data fax voice modem.
When I run the configuration program Kppp it says that the line busy ??? . Sure that nothing is on the line !!!!!
I tried to install a module named phonedev which is in kernel/drivers/telephony. but I have the same problem
Please where can I find the appropriate driver and how to configure it

thank a lot

"phonedev which is in kernel/drivers/telephony" is for IP phoneing and has NOTHING to do with modems. so forget about it.

most probably this is a winmodem. go to, there are lots of docs how to resolve this problem (it worked for me too)
