How to change processor and add RAM

I'm looking to change my processor from 32 bit to 64 bit and add RAM. How would I do that and what 64 processors are 100% compatible with linux

I don't think there are any issues with CPUs' linux compatibility.

The kind of a processor you can get depends on a motherboard you have now.

Can you post the exact model of it?

without knowing the make/model of your computer it impossible to say if it is upgradeable. Adding RAM should easy but upgrading CPUs not so much.

The CPU on a laptop is probably soldered and unless you have the necessary skills I would not attempt replacing it. I would also doubt the existing motherboard is designed for a 64 bit processor so even if you could replace it the computer is not going to work.

Alright I'll save up for a new computer then :(

sycamorex 11-19-2011 08:10 AM

Out of curiosity what motherboard do you use?

asipper 11-19-2011 08:22 AM

I have no idea how to find out :(

You'd have to open the computer and check what is written on the motherboard itself. Do you know the exact name of your computer system (it might be displayed on the computer case)?

knowing me I'll probably break it or spill water in it. But I found 2 laptops. One I have the charger for but it doesn't have a wifi card. The other has a wifi card but I don't have a charger. How would I transfer the wifi card to the other laptop?

Without knowing make/model numbers we have no way of knowing if the wifi card would be compatable nor how easy it would to to gain access nor if it is removable.

Post output of

#lspci -v

#lshw

I've given up on my current laptop. @sycromorex the laptop w/ a charge doesn't seem to have a pannel for a wifi card. At least there's no sticker. But for the one with the card there is a sticker.

sycamorex 11-19-2011 02:20 PM

As michaelk mentioned, it'd be helpful if we knew the models of both laptops. They should be written on the laptops

asipper 11-19-2011 02:37 PM

The models of the laptops are:
one with wifi card 5205-S705 (Toshiba satellite)
one without wifi card i think it's WA65A7S1V554 (alienware M9700 series)

sycamorex 11-19-2011 02:46 PM

Googling alienware M9700 indicates that it does have a wifi card. WA65A7S1V554 shows no results whatsoever. Are you sure that's correct?

If you can boot the Alienware laptop with a linux live cd and post the output of lspci -v (as suggested in post #11)
