How do you detect and configure a modem on a Powerbook G3 neworld running Mandrake?

Mandrake 9.1 PPC has a drakconnect program that auto detects a normal modem connection on port ttySO, but modem does not respond when I try to connect. I tried the KPP remote access utility to configure the modem, but it does not respond. Help.

are you sure the modem is ttyS0? my powerbook g3 has the modem as ttyS2
run the 'dmesg' connection
mine shows this for serial ports
macserial: serial modem detected
PowerMac Z8530 serial driver version 2.0
tty00 at 0xd11a4020 (irq = 15) is a Z8530 ESCC, port = modem-printer
tty01 at 0xd11ab000 (irq = 16) is a Z8530 ESCC, port = infrared (IrDA)
tty02 at 0xd11b1020 (irq = 79) is a Z8530 ESCC, port = internal-modem (internal modem)
