Question How do I configure my trackpoint on Win98

I recently posted a question about an erratic trackpoint, and received a reply telling me to configure XF86Config-4. I have Windows 98 on my laptop, where do I go to find this file and edit it according to the specifications?
BTW, I was told to edit it as follows:
Section "Input Device"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "Protocol" "PS/2"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

Thank you!

This file is usually locate in path /etc/X11/. I wouldn't suggest you try to edit it with W98. You didn't state what distro you are using. Probably W98 won't have file system support for your Linux partitions. W98 only supports fat12, fat16, and fat32.

So, you are at a point where you need to learn a non gui editor, like vi or vim. Most people have to cross this bridge, so boot up linux, and log on as root. You should have set a root password when you did the install.

From the root; or in linux speak, '/' use the cd ( change directory command to navigate to /etc/X11. Once there, confirm the presence of the file, with the command ls XF86Config. If it is there, it will list the file. Then issue the command vim XF86Config. The editor will open the file, and add the lines as instructed. Remember to save the file. Remember linux IS case sensitive!

Then you can start the x server with the startx command. If you have done things correctly, your track point should work.

Question Confused

Pardon my stupidity, but what is a distro? And I don't understand what you mean when you say log on as 'root'. I bought this laptop as-is on ebay, so I don't have a password. And what is the X server?
I know I sound idiot, but I a lot of that vocabulary flew over my head,
Thanks for your help!

If you have Win98 on the thing why are you asking about it here?

Lightbulb My mistake

So these forums have nothing to do with windows, even if you have a Thinkpad laptop? If so, then I apologize for posting on the wrong board, I honestly didn't know. What led me here was a google search for 'IBM Thinkpad troubleshooting' to correct my trackpoint problem, I wasn't aware that the help wasn't compatible with Windows.

This forum is for Linux support, Linux is a completely different OS than Windows.
