How do I configure linux to use Verizon u727 broadband access usb card?
I am having no success configuring an Asus eeepc (linux os) to use a Verizon U727 broadband access card! The verizon store gave me their web download site but it doesn't list linux as a choice for the os. Anyone with a similar problem?

Make sure you have wvdial installed:

apt-get install wvdial

Whack the following into /etc/wvdial.conf

[Dialer Defaults]
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
#Baud = 3686400
#Init1 = ATZ
#Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
#Init2 = ATE0V1&D2&C1S0=0+IFC=2,2
#Init3 = AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet"
Phone = *99***1#
Username = web
Password = web
New PPPD = yes
Ask Password = 0
#Dial Command = ATDT
Stupid Mode = 1
Idle Seconds = 3000
#ISDN = 0
#Modem Type = Analog Modem
#Auto DNS = 1

Plug in your datacard.

Then run

sudo wvdial

I know it automatically works in some Ubuntu dists but stock debian won't and for some reason my Ubuntu 8.04 won't play nice with it.

This config also works for Vodafone USB 3G cards in the UK.

Actually... I didn't have to hardly do anything at all. When the OS was installed, I made sure all my "accessories" were already plugged in and the install found it all. The broadband gets activated once you plug it in and on the menu bar; is the double screen icon. Click on that and a drop down comes in. Choose the broadband and it connected up no problem. The numbers and authentication are stored on the device. Was surfing straight away. No hassle.

need to initialize
I am using the previous usb 720 from verizon with ubuntu. The info on the sprint page is what got me going, the one glitch I found is that the device must be initialized on a windows or supported os with the verizon software. After that it is just another modem to ppp. So initialize it once and go, I can plug mine into any of my linux machines and be on line in a couple seconds.
