how do I boost the ethernet signal strenght?

I tried searching this but did not get a situation that was relavant to me... I am quite new on this linex thing, and so much of this is pretty bizzare. When I was running Microsoft I could hit most ethernets. Now that I am on linex there is one I know I can hit. I have read that a signal spreader is what i need, but the article did not specify if this was software, hardware or something on the side of the owner of the cafe that I am typing this in at. I know nothing about programing code, so that is likely out. I am using a HP Pavilion zv5000 Iam not in a hurry, but then I dont want to wait a year either. I hope that was enough info
May the forest be with you.

Reading very much between the lines, I do believe he wants to automatically connect to whatever wireless access point he encounters (like in a cafe). This, of course, is possible so long as his wireless card is adequately supported and he is set up to automatically find locations to connect to.

Lacking info on distro, though, makes it difficult to tell him what to do.

You are correct. I tend to hang out in cafes (usually not very busy ones) and can Hit one cafe pretty much 100% of the time, but in others I don't seem have it configured properly. How do I tell the computer to search for a signal that is open and free to access by anyone? I am putting together a zine, and so I like to make sure my data is correct and sometimes get viewpoints that are stronger than my own, and also have to argue my viewpoints cause that can only make my book stronger.

Also my studio has some degree of a connection, but someone seems to be using a program to tell my computer that there is no signal strength. I can turn my computer on but the minute I try the internet the symbol that signifies how strong the signal is goes to one diamond and turns red. Silver blue means pretty strong. The landlord says that is not supposed to happen (free wireless was one of the conditions of the lease) I am going to get this issue resolved by him, but I would like to know how to get around that in the future so I know a little bit more of what my computer is doing.

Thanks for your time.
