How can I configure my Soundcard?

My laptop is running fedora core 1 (I've been tempted to download core 2 but there seems to be loads of problems with it)

Anyways, every time I boot up, when I reach the login screen, I get a full volume "BEEP" out of the speakers.

I went into the KDE control center to try and sort this out, but it says "no information for soundcard".

How can I stop the BEEP?

My laptop is an Acer Ferrari 3000. you can see the specs here
http://global.acer.com/products/notebook/fr3000.htm

I've disabled the beep - found this in linux distributions - fedora section:

You can disable the login beep by adding this to your
/etc/X11/gdm/Init/:0 file

"/usr/X11R6/bin/xset -b" right after the copyright and minus the quotes.

However I still can't configure my sound settings in any way....
