Hibernate/suspend not working on Sony VAIO VGN-AR21B with OpenSuse 10.2
Hello,
I have recently bought a VAIO VGN-AR21B, and I have installed OpenSuse 10.2, running KDE as graphical interface. I have difficulties with "suspend to RAM" and "hibernate to disk". Issuing the "suspend to RAM" from kpowersave results in a screen with a promising "preparing to suspend"; but a couple of seconds later the screen prints "resuming", and the system does not suspend. Issuing instead the "hibernate to disk", the memory is effectively paged to the swap, but then the system hangs without shutting down. Turning the laptop off and on again, the system tries to resume linux but fails, falling back to normal boot; the filesystem has to be fsck-ed since it had not been cleanly shut down [I would not want to try again!]. Any idea of a possible solution/workaround? Thanks! Andrea P.S. I should say that apart from this problem OpenSuse was great on this laptop: wireless and graphic card worked very nicely and quickly. |
Depending on the hardware on your laptop, you might need to pass pnpbios=off or acpi_sleep=s3_bios to your kernel upon boot. I had to use both to get suspend to ram working reliably. Suspend to disk always worked fine without those parameters added to the kernel boot line in grub.
Don't forget to run update-grub as root if you make changes to your menu.lst in /boot/grub. |
Difficulties to put a VAIO to sleep
Hi Titetanium
thanks for posting the suggestion. I just tried but it does not seem to work. I suspect it is related with the fact that the system is configured to go to sleep or suspend in "userspace", not in "kernel" mode. I keep investigating.. thanks anyway Andrea |
