Haven't used a Mac in a long time but can't you hold down 'C' or 'Apple + C' to force the machine to boot from CD.

another option is to try Yellow dog linux

Yellow dog is a red hat based ppc version of linux. I'm running a dual boot iBook G3 with yellowdog 4.0.1 and and mac osx 10.4. It's lovely (on the whole)! Just serach google for yellowdog for the terrasoft website and then yellowdog download for the isos.

Install osx first and partition your disk with macs partitioner at the start of the install. Just tell it the linux partition is unix (linux will write over it anyway). Then reboot with the first yellow dog cd in and hold down c from the beginning. Then install yellow dog in the partition you've created.

Installing mac second seems to destroy the boot partition of linux and you can only boot mac.

I had no serious problems on a G3.

Have fun.
