headphone sound not always working in ubuntu 8.10

I upgraded to 8.10 (from 8.04) on my Gateway laptop (T6815) a few days ago an I noticed a strange problem with the audio from the headphone jack.

When you start Ubuntu with the headphones plugged in, sound works great. When you unplug the headphones (so it switches to the speakers) and then plug the headphones back in, sound doesn't work through the headphones.

sound through the headphone jack only seems to work if you start ubuntu and leave the headphones in. If you remove them and try to plug them in again, sound doesn't seem to work.

I don't think it is a hardware problem because I tested with a live-cd and Windows and it doesn't seem to have the same problem.

I think whatever is switching the audio from the speakers to the headphone jack isn't working.

Does anyone know whats wrong?
