hdc read error

I am using a Toshiba 4600 with the 2.6.11.2 kernel, and am getting this read error. It works for cds, but not DVDs - At boot I get:

ATAPI device hdc:
Error: Medium error -- (sense key=0x03)
(reserved error code) -- (asc=0x57, ascq = 0x00)
The failed "read cd/dvd Capacity" packer command was:
"25 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00"

I have googled it a ton, but have not come across any fixes. Thanx in advance, - Bill
