Arrow hangs at “decompressing Linux OK... Loading Kernel”

I have a situation where I loaded UBUNTU on a Sony Vaio notebook that is a few years old. UBUNTU won’t boot (it hangs at “decompressing Linux OK... Loading Kernel”) unless I first boot to the knoppix live CD (or apparently any other operating system) then restart the computer and allow it to boot to UBUNTU off the hard drive, in which case UBUNTU works great!

I tried adding acpi=off to the menu.1st file but it didn’t help.

Any other Ideas??

Try appending "pci=noacpi noapic" to the startup line.
