I had this same problem. I think shrike (RH9) comes pre-installed with pilot-link--especially if you have GnomePilot or KPilot installed. If not then do a search for pilot-link-0.11.8.tar.gzip on google. That was recent about 3 weeks ago when I did this.
I had the hardest time figuring out what to do, but finally I su'd and did a

# cd /dev
# ln -s /dev/ttyUSB1 /dev/pilot
I don't know that this is what everyone should do, but it worked for me. Even when I went through settings and changed them manually to /dev/ttyUSB1 in
JPilot I couldn't get it to work. However, this symbolic link did the trick.
