You don't have to uninstall Linux. All you needed to do was to start the XP recovery console and run the fixboot command. If you have a full XP installation CD, not a computer manufacturer's rescue CD, then you can boot the XP installation CD and run the recovery console that way. Then run fixboot. When Windows is running you can use the Windows disk administrator to do whatever you want with the partition that was used to hold Linux.

The title of your post wasn't very descriptive. Something like "Restore Windows boot loader" would have been much better.

?.....

I'm assuming your question is about how to get your computer to start up, since you didn't put it in your post.

Grub uses a file in the ubuntu partition (/boot/grub/menu.lst) to load the required settings in which to start.

One good solution for you would be to pop a windows XP disk in go to recovery console type fixboot and fixmbr. This usually works. I personally just keep a boot partition on my hard drive with grubs directory in it this gives me total control over my boot and lets me do whatever I want with the other partitions.

Stress_Junkie beat me to the punch by about 1 minute... anyway, I think the fixmbr command may be required also

Unhappy

i dont have the disk from this particular system ,

i do have an (old) xp installation cd

can i use that one

i feel so stupid for what i did now,
need to give back the laptop to the institute tommorow ,
xp wasn't good enough for the job . but i didn't now uninstalling a dual boot with ubuntu would give me such a headache

so can i use that cd to fix mbr or not

or should i reinstall ubuntu, boot in xp go to recovery concole and type in fixboot command

there is a windows partion with the bootini file
it's called something like "preload" and i didn't wipe that away , so i guessed after wiping the linux partition it would automatically start xp, fogetting that grub is "attached" to the mbr ,

let me know if i should use the xp installation disk (which i got with mty desktop pc)

You said you had xp---so the older xp install CD should be fine...(Try it)

In re installing GAG: Since it is not your computer, I would think it better to put it back the way it was

Yes

any XP install disk should work or search on microsoft for their xp recovery disk. boot from CD select repair windows installation using recovery console, pick the install (#1) type fixmbr, then fixboot

if this disk you speak of is like a dell or gateway system restore disk then this may not work. (you should try it anyway though)

If all else fails, ie. XP recovery method, try just a fdisk /mbr off a boot floppy to re-write the master boot record.
