Unhappy Graphics Linux on Toshiba Portege S100

I too bought Toshiba Portege S100. Initially I tried Knoppix, everything seemed fine except that internet was not working properly. I figured that I can install them later. Then I tried to install debian, seems that I did not recognize the hard drive, same with slackware. Then I googled and found out Linux does not have support for S-ATA drives. Slackware has options for scsi and it did not work.

Then I tried Mandriva 2006, it recognized the hard drive instantly and I went ahead and installed it. Later I found that X was not working properly. So then I googled again and installed nVidia driver(which required kernel source rpm which I downloaded it). I started X again, this time I get a splash screen for nVidia and then I get the screen but the the resolution is screwed up. I increased and decreased the resolution using XFDrake. I also tried changing the monitor driver. Currently the monitor type is Flat Panel.

If any body can suggest me a solution or suggest other distro altogether it will be great....

hi,

first of all laptops are usually a pain to install linux on (when you finally have set it up to work, it works pretty good though)

on slackware i can tell you that you probably had to use the sata.i kernel during installation instead of the default bare.i.

on fedora i don't know much about XFDrake or whatever they use to set up your screen resolution, what you need to look (google or the unofficial website for linux http://newsletter.toshiba-tro.de/main/) for is the exact screen resolution for your monitor and the you can change the settings in the file /etc/xorg.conf
