Gparted of VectorLinux 5.09 doesn't find the hard disk

I am trying to install VectorLinux 5.09 on a laptop (Dell latitude Cpx, 128 MB ram, windows XP currently installed, Pentium III 650 MHz, 10 GB HD Fujitsu MHM2100AT). The liveCD loads pretty well, but when I start the installation procedure (I am going for a clean install, no dual boot or anything)the partition programm Gparted ends up searching endlessly for available drives and doesn't find any. I tried mounting and unmounting the hard drive in the task bar, but even if it is mounted there and I am able to acces the files on the disk, Gparted does not find it. How can I solve this and install VectorLinux on the HD?

You could use another distro to wipe the disk, and put in an ext3 filesystem, then reboot with the vectorlinux install disk. Personally, I wouldn't put up with it. Try zenlinux, it's also based on slackware, if that's what you are after, and it's pretty lean. For a lower resource box, I'd go with fluxbuntu. You have the added benifit of the large and newbie friendly ubuntu community, and a distro that makes things easy for you.

Good luck...

P.S. You might also want to try to boot with the noapci or noauto kernel options. They can help with some laptops. I'd go with fluxbuntu or xbuntu on an olderbox. Good luck...

Woho! Zenwalk 5.0 is up and running on the old grandma. Thanks for the tip. Fluxbuntu looks very nice, but is a little bit on the raw side still. Now I just have to figure out how the hell everything works. Just give me a couple of years :-)
