Getting sound working on my Gateway M4525GZ

I have a Gateway M4525GZ laptop. I love this little laptop, it is lite, fairly fast, and it is quiet (no loud fans). There are only two things that I cannot get working, the built in SD reader (not really a problem), and the audio. I have tried Slack 10, SUSE 9.1, Knoppix3.4, and Mandrake 10 with no luck. Under Slack, I have updated the kernel to 2.6.7 contained in testing, compiled and used kernel 2.6.8.1, and tried ALSA 1.07rc1. The only time that I ever hear any sound is when I use cfdisk to partition the drive, after that, there is nothing. Please help, so I can finally ditch Windoze on this machine.

TIA,
Eric

I will be no help

I'm sorry to say but sound support seems to one of the major beefs with linux. I've read that support issues revolve around legal wrangling, but I have no idea what that means. Suse should put a note on the box 'Abandon all hope of sound, ye who enter here'. I just got tired of trying to make it work and hope that Suse will solve the problem for me. Just remember, it's not you, it's the os. :(

Got it!

For all that might have this problem in the future, I just had to set the external amplifier to "Mute", and it all worked! Gateway really has the audi hooked up on here funny.

In ALSAMIXER, near the far right, there is one named "External Audio Mute," which by default is not muted. Go to that column, and press the 'm' key. You should see "MM" appear at the top. Exit alsamixer, and type 'alsactl store' to save the settings. That is all it takes.
