General Dynamics GD6000 wireless vs Linux Mint and Kali

GD6000 with 4G RAM used to work fine with Win7. Removed from active service so I resurrected it with Linux Mint 17.1. Everything seems to work EXCEPT the wireless. Enabled in BIOS and indicator light by the KB show green for wireless. "IFCONFIG ra0" up says no device. INT WTF Over? BTW... Ditto with Kali 1.0.9.

Thanx

The laptop has an Intel WiFi Link 5100 wireless adapter which uses the iwlwifi driver and requires firmware.

kali disables the wireless BY DEFAULT for security reasons
you have to turn it on first to use it

Found this little gem that says wireless is disabled...

I thought that's what "sudo rfkill unblock 0" was suppose to do for me - oh and I did this too "sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart"

^ which distro are we talking about?
if kali, then:
Quote:
Is Kali Linux Right For You?

As the distribution’s developers, you might expect us to recommend that everyone should be using Kali Linux. The fact of the matter is, however, that Kali is a Linux distribution specifically geared towards professional penetration testers and security specialists, and given its unique nature, it is NOT a recommended distribution if you’re unfamiliar with Linux or are looking for a general-purpose Linux desktop distribution for development, web design, gaming, etc.

Even for experienced Linux users, Kali can pose some challenges.
