I just installed Debian etch in this laptop and the end of installation I could make sound to work through alsaconf. Shortly after I did the required updates with Synaptic but then the sound could not be heard anymore. It seems like the driver is not working. Any help will be appreciated.
The present kernel version is 2.6.18-4 and the driver installed by alsaconf is snd-hda-intel.
The audio device is Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family). I got additional information (can't remember where): Codec Sigmatel ID 7634
and Generic 1657 ID 3057. I'm not very sure about these data though.

I have noticed that many Gateway laptops have this SOUND problem. Maybe I should build a kernel for my MT6840 laptop. Has anyone tried and how can that be done? I will appreciate a step-by step procedure. Thanks a lot

Compiling new kernel

I will try a solution by compiling a new kernel with the latest source. Have a few questions: Does anyone know if the kernel source has all the driver for the device sound card of this laptop? How can I figure it out; or perhaps I will need to patch the kernel before compilation; where can I get patches? Does anyone know a good web site that may answer these questions? Thanks
