Gateway M675 ACPI
 

Ok well there's been numerous talk concerning the ACPI functionality within Linux on the Gateway M675 laptop... I'm using the latest distro of ubuntu (5.04), and hibernation and some internal cooling problems are the only things I have left to sort out. Everything else is rock solid!

When I begin the hibernation process with acpi enabled, the laptop will begin to go into the hibernate to disk process, i.e. turn off the screen and I see some hard drive activity, but it never fully shuts down.

The internal cooling problems mentioned above are what worry me most. I dual boot between XP and ubuntu. When in XP the laptop merely gets warm. Under ubuntu, the bottom of the laptop, mainly the area around the battery and the dvd-r, get really really hot. After a few hours of usage it becomes very bothersome and quite frankly I fear leaving it on too long because of possible internal damage.

I've tried disabling acpi and using apm instead, but this doesn't seem to help my situation. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm you should really stay with ACPI, APM is old, evil and broken.
Do you have acpi thermal turned on? If you use some modularised kernel, try : "modprobe thermal". This is the module that handle the dynamic cooling and that watch over the heat. Some laptop also support that you "force" the cooling, even if the BIOS says it doesnt need it.
Does Ubuntu provide you a kernel or do you have to compile it yourself? Laptop sometime need very precise tweak to work the good way, I found it was some trouble to use a generic kernel configuration on my laptop... you might want to recompile your kernel by yourself to choose right set of options by yourself? :)

I tried upgrading the kernel and it still did not help... When I type "acpi" in the console the computer no-longer freezes, and everything works ok, but I’m still having heat issues and suspend to disk will not work. The heat seems to be coming from an area either in or under the dvd-rw. I've burned cds/dvds in ubuntu before and didn't experience any problems; the drive never sounds like its active when not in use either. I know it's a long shot (since most linux users would know better to buy a gateway laptop) but if any of you have gotten these issues resolved, please don’t hesitate to respond to this thread.

Maybe the problem is simply with Gateways. I have a late-2002-era 600YG2 running Ubuntu 5.10 and it does the *exact* same thing. The screen turns off and the hard drive is active for a bit, but the power light in the front is still on. The fan runs every so often. Pretty much what you said.

Everything else works great though. I'm stumped to do anything other than compile the kernel with swsusp2 in it and I haven't ever done a kernel yet (shame on me as I have been using Linux for quite a while. I've just been lucky so far!)
