Garbage in Blender

Hi,

I have a new x86 toshiba laptop, the cheapest one at wal mart, running ubuntu 9.04. I have been trying to get blender working on it. It puts garbage in the window. I have updated the drivers using the instructions here http://webupd8.blogspot.com/2009/05/...epository.html, to no avail. The next thing I have been told to try is to reduce or disable the hardware acceleration. How do I do this?

Thanks.
