In case someone else needs this info... Fedora Core 1 doesn't set the sound card up properly on the Inspiron 3500 (mine is a 400MHz PII model). I removed all of the audio-related lines from /etc/modules.conf and added these (taken from a few websites with instructions on getting this card to work on older distributions)...
Code:
alias midi off
alias sound ad1848
options ad1848 io=0x530 irq=5 dma=0 dma2=1
options adlib_card io=0x388
and then rebooted. I then opened the sound card detection tool, played the test sound and it worked! I haven't tested if it keeps working after a resume from sleep because power management is still not qoeking properly but if it doesn't there are some scripts available online that can be used to get around that.
Also you need to check in your BIOS that for the sound card the settings irq, dma, and dma2 are consistant to what you put in your modules.conf (mine were from the factory)
