Question firmware_class error on module load

i am trying to load the linux-native driver for a wireless network card (an ipw2200) on a dell inspiron 600m.

the wireless driver itself is not giving me any errors, but requires hotplugging and firmware_class to work. when i try to load the modules, they load successfully (i can see them with lsmod), but the error "FATAL: Module firmware_class not found." is returned when i do it.

my lsmod does not include "firmware" or "firmware_class" in its list of modules. if i run "hotplug" with no arguments, it asks for an agent name and lists firmware as an option.

it seems like my firmware module is missing/screwed. how can i re-install/fix it?

i'm still getting my head around hotplugging, so feel free to tell me if i'm completely off track.

You have to recompile your kernel.
Go to
Device Drivers ->Generic Driver Options->Hotplug firmware loading support

or edit .config of given kernel and manually

Good luck!

So go
