Have you gotten your soundcard working yet on the 5000? I just upgraded mine from RHat 9 (which worked) to Fedora 2 and it's not working. It is identified by the soundcard detector thingy, but nothing happens. When I tried running it by hand it complained I didn't have /etc/modprobe.conf, which I didn't. It looks to have renamed the original modprobe.conf~, and created a new modprobe.conf.dist, but niether is read at startup time without renaming one or the other of them to modprobe.conf.

There's a /sbin/generate-modprobe.conf program but it didn't have any better success.

Also, for those suggesting to turn the sound up, it can't be turned up because there's no mixer. There's no mixer because there's no sound card. Arrrgh!

You can either go Hardcore on setting up your sound, or you can do the devastatingly easy:

KDE is a lot bettr at setting up your sound than Gnome, install KDE, and it'll sort the sound out for the majority of laptops. Once you've set everything up in KDE you can revert to using Gnome. You might be able to get away with removing KDE afterwards. However after a week of using KDE, the thought of going back to gnome is unapealing. But then i'm an eyecandy junky.
