FC6-Broadcom 802.11 54mbps wirelss problem

Hi all,

I am new with linux. I recently installed FC6 on my compaq presario V5000 having AMD turion 64 bit processor. The wireless card with the network is Broadcom 802.11 b/g 54 MBPS.

After the installation, I could see the wireless card under the network profiles as eth1. It correctly identifies the card manufacturer and list it under hardware tab too.
Under the profile tab it is listed as eth1 with type as wireless.

However when I try to activate it, I get following error messages:

1. When I try it with DHCP, I get a message:
Determining IP information for eth1... failed; no link present. Check cable?

2. If I try it with static configuration I get the following message:
SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such file or directory
Failed to bring up eth1.

Note: The wireless network I tried for is secure and encrypted. I have not set any configuration yet for this. I am under the impression that first I have to activate the card and then set all the connection configuration like a standard windows machine.

I am not sure what is the problem. As I said I am new with the linux, so do not have much of idea what is wrong. I think once I can see the card under the network profiles and hardware, I do not have to install drivers and all. I may be wrong. I searched through internet and see most of the people suggesting ndiswrapper to solve the problem. However I am reluctant to use a wrapper. I want to make it completely linux based system and use native drivers in kernel. I will highly appreciate if someone can help me with this problem.

Thanks in advance.

Check which Broadcom wireless interface you have; lspci -v

Then visit: http://bcm43xx.berlios.de/?go=devices

Is the wireless device reported as supported??

I tired lspci -v and get the chip id to be BCM4318.
The site you suggested shows that the is is unstable and has some transmission power issues.
I tried using ndiswrapper for the time being and it is working.
I still would prefer native driver.

Thanks for your help.
