FC4 update or gxmame killed my graphics
 

Hello all Linux users

Quick question I am hoping you can help me with, last nice I ran a full yum update on my laptop (FC4) and it promptly installed 86 outstanding updates. Following that I thought I would install gxmame for a bit of fun (I also had to install 2 lib’s to make it work) anyway I played a couple of games for 30mins of so then powered off the system.

I have just powered it back on and now it’s unable to boot into X - following the first part of the boot sequence the system starts udev etc and the see the OK signs then it would normally go to the splash/system startup screen – however at this point I just get strips of color and a couple of funny patterns at the top of the screen. I am also totally unable to get in to any other non X sessions ctrl + alt + F1 to F5 just doesn’t do anything I am still left with the pretty patterns. I really want to avoid rebuilding this system as I have just got it working with everything I want – please can anyone offer some help and please treat me as a total noobie with step by steps.

As far as I know the system in running a default intel shared graphics and nothing fancy like an Nvidia

The only thing comes to my mind is a wrong setting in XF86Config file (hope that it's not anything else)

can you please post this file?
you can find it at one of the below directories
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config (in most distros)
/etc/XF86Config
/etc/X11

there is also a file called XF86Config.eg that you can use it as an example or maybe you can overwrite it on the original(ofcourse by backing it up) and then use it for troubleshootin'

I think that maybe wrong values of vertical and horizontial synchronization.

Also at the point where you are right now, try pressing the keys Ctrl+Alt (and then the plus '+' or the minus '-' sign)
You can use this combination of keys to change from a higher resolution to a lower. Start from higher(eg Ctrl+Alt +) That at least will help you know that the settings for the lower resolutions work well.

Many Thanks for your reply vangelis - I have tried many different configurations of my xorg.conf file now via booting into single user mode and I think I will be able to get the system running under a standered vesa driver, however I seem to be unable to load the intel 852/915 driver as I get Gart module errors. I don't understand why or how yum has totally killed my xorg drivers and or config. Can anyone suggest ways I can salvage this? I really want to avoid rebuilding this and doing a full yum update again only to get the same issue.
